Bridging Romanticism and Modernism, the composers of the Second Viennese School - Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern - ushered in a new musical era. A conductor and composer whose studies also embraced medicine, psychology and archaeology, he took a special interest in the music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
