In the diverse Manhattan neighbourhood of Washington Heights, bodega owner Usnavi de la Vega (Ramos) dreams of returning to his native Dominican Republic to restore his late father's bar while attempting to romance Vanessa (Melissa Barrera), who works at the local nail salon but aspires to become a fashion designer downtown. Meanwhile, college student Nina (Grace) returns home from Stanford University with some stunning news and Usnavi discovers he has sold a winning lottery ticket.
