"In Between Energy" (book four of the "In Between Time" series) begins in February 2051, the day after the events of "In Between Matter" end. After its stunning failure to fix the timeline, the Ranch regroups. The World's Time Travel Facilities struggle to learn how to work together, as well as get along with family, friends and those in authority over them, in a radically different, politically chaotic, reversed world and universe. Anticipating a worst-case scenario, a select few at the Ranch are compelled to put a subterfuge into motion, which initiates many unintended consequences. Regarding the timeline fix, they have no choice, except one; to try again. After new time travel techniques are tested, Joe and Janice are sent back together on a series of increasingly dangerous missions. While they have some success, they repeatedly fail to achieve the most important goal. Then, an eccentric English scientist upends the agreed upon and accepted strategy. Meanwhile, more connections are uncovered which provide perturbing contexts about events of the past year. Faced with deceptions, dodges, disturbing dreams and fearing a fate worse than death, Janice convinces Joe that they must take matters into their own hands. But their efforts are futile. Nothing can stop what has been put in motion. Relieved that their worst fears prove to be unfounded, they resume their roles and successfully perform their remaining missions. However, many issues still remain unresolved, including the consequences of their actions. The serendipitous discovery that a mysterious prime number was surreptitiously inserted into a simulation, leads to a shocking revelation that causes a crisis of conscience for everyone. Finally, data seized from the enemy time travel facility reveals their opponent's ultimate objective and the inconceivably immense arrogance of the adversary.
