The Scottish writer still pops up in literature classes across the world, with people instantly familiar with titles like Ivanhoe, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Bride of Lammermoor, and more. Scott is often considered the inventor of the modern historical novel, and his style was imitated throughout the 19th century. His legacy has been debated ever since, but everyone can agree that he has remained influential. The Talisman is set in the Middle East during the end of the Third Crusade, a departure from Scott?s more typical locations, Scotland and England. This novel is just as full of political intrigue, dealing with Saladin and Richard the Lionheart while following a fictional Scottish knight.
