I'm no expert. It's just that I research a lot and I know a lot. I love photography because I see the patterns, the symmetry and the colours in what could be a picture. I remember the days of film as if it were yesterday. That's because I am 75 years old and go back quite a way. When the digital camera arrived, well, I thought I'd gone to heaven. No more waiting a week to see the results from my film. No more wasting money on pictures that I didn't want and were second rate. With the digital era, I just clicked a button to delete. What's more, when I loaded my photos into the computer, I could manipulate the images in so many ways with special FX to make great photos look even greater! The first consumer digital cameras were marketed in the late 1990s. Professionals gravitated toward digital slowly. That is because the resolution of film still outstripped the sharpness of digital images. But that slowly changed as 1 Megapixel pictures became 5 Megapixel pictures and then 10 Megapixel and so on. Professionals were won over when digital files became as good or better than the images produced by film. They could also turn out photos faster than conventional methods. FX means "effects". I could enhance the colours. I could make the picture look like a painting. I could make things swirl in them, make the sky red if I wished. Blow up a person's head if I thought he had a swelled head, or minimize it if I thought he was a pea-brain. I could take a wedding photo and where someone blinked, extract the open eyes from another picture and insert them into the face of the offending party. I could make a beautiful black and white photo of the bride and maid of honour holding their flowers and just put colour into the flowers keeping the rest in black and white. What wonderful "FX"! This FX photobook takes you through a bit of photographic history, which I love to research. I intend to tell you a bit about my introduction to the camera and then show off my scenery photos where I applied FX. FX works nicely on people too. Welcome to FX in John's Photobook Series.
