Uncle Tom's Cabin

This novel takes place on the Shelby plantation in Kentucky, where Uncle Tom lives in a cabin with his wife and children. It tells the story of Uncle Tom, depicted as a saintly, dignified slave. While being transported by boat to auction in New Orleans, Tom saves the life of Little Eva, whose grateful father then purchases Tom. Eva and Tom soon become great friends. The character was seen by many readers as a ground-breaking humanistic portrayal of a slave, one who uses non resistance and gives his life to protect others who have escaped from slavery. Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin was inspired by the memoir of a real person: Josiah Henson.
