The Decameron
Giovanni Boccaccio
Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), a friend of Petrarch and one of the best writers of the Italian Renaissance, will forever remain famous for the book we are now offering our readers. In 1349-1352, inspired by the Black Death of 1348 which he survived in his home city of Florence, Boccaccio wrote one of the funniest, naughtiest and deepest books about the human nature, Decameron. This book, as well as some other writings of Boccaccio, inspired Chaucer and is easily recognizable in the Canterbury Tales. We publish the Italian masterpiece in a wonderful and elegant translation of J. M. Rigg who succeeded in rendering the spicy flavour of Decameron while adding to it the lovely archaisms of the English language.
