Life in an African Mission Hospital

Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) is a beautiful country with amazing people. I first went there during my senior year of medical school and spent three months at two mission hospitals. My wife Marilyn and I have always been interested in international mission service. After completion of my residency at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas, we moved to Mashoko Christian Hospital in Zimbabwe where I became medical superintendent. Our daughters are Christine (Christy) age 2 and Julia who was 4 months. This was an amazing and memorable time in our lives. Unfortunately a war between the white, colonial government remnant after the British left and the black African population was heating up. This eventually affected our ministry and led to an earlier than planned departure. I returned to the United States and began my nearly 30-year career in Emergency Medicine at Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington, Indiana. My original partners had all served in Rhodesia as mission doctors. My call to medical missions continued, as I have been a part of 47 short-term medical mission outreaches mostly as team leader. Serving in this manner has been so fulfilling as I have seen God working around the world. My desire is that those who read this book will be inspired to serve and use whatever talent they have to honor God.
