Excerpt: I tried hard to keep up but couldn't. Soon Marco disappeared around a bend in the trail. Tears stung my eyes then as I felt frustrated and terribly alone. The trail narrowed and I looked down to the canyon floor a thousand feet below, feeling a twinge of vertigo. Suddenly, the ground gave way and my feet flew out from under me. I fell hard on my hip and rolled forward onto my stomach, sliding down the incline. It sloped sharply from the trail, covered with loose gravel. I slid down, the bare skin of my face, arms, and hands burning from the scraping of millions of tiny, sharp stones. Finally, my toes hit something, a ledge or a protruding rock and I came to an abrupt stop. My heart was beating wildly, and my hip hurt like it was on fire. I lay against the steep slope with my cheek resting on the loose, pebbled surface.
