In the summer of 1914 John and Annie Williams from Lancashire are enjoying their family life even though the future is very uncertain. In Germany the Lehmann family are doing the same. As the threat of war moves closer both families are concerned that their sons and daughters will be called upon to defend their countries. Before the true horrors of the conflict become a reality each of the adult children of the two families rally to the cause. At first it's an adventure and an opportunity for each of them to make their mark. As the years of bloody conflict pass the possibility of injury and loss becomes a part of everyday life. There is little respite as the two families wait and hope. In 1914 the world is changing at a rapid pace. This is the time of exhilarating technological advances. Society is changing and there are new and exciting opportunities for many. Women are looking to establish themselves and the working class are hopeful of a better future.
